Why do I need an asbestos inspection?

Asbestos is widespread in Australia as it was a very common building material until the early nineties. It was used in over 3000 household products and is commonly found in fencing sheets, roofing and eaves, heat insulation, cement products and even car brake pads. Asbestos sheeting is relatively safe once it’s in place and intact but, disturbing, breaking or even moving it is a serious health hazard without protective equipment. Breathing in asbestos fibres can cause serious lung scarring and will put you at risk of several serious diseases including cancer.  It can can crop up just about anywhere in homes of a certain age so if you think you might have asbestos testing in your home it’s best to call in a professional team like Perth Asbestos Services to be sure.

So is it in my house?

Roughly 1 in 3 Australian homes contain some asbestos. It’s most common in houses built before 1985 but it was still in lawful use until 2003. Your roofing, fences, sheds, tiles, insulation, flooring or even paint could contain asbestos. If your place is around this age consider booking in an asbestos inspection before you:

  • Renovate your home (particularly kitchen or bathroom areas)
  • Replace your shed, fence or roof
  • Buy a new home or investment property
  • Rent your house to new tenants

Then if my house is new I don’t need to worry?

It’s less likely to be an issue in newer homes but not guaranteed. Some imported building materials have been found to poisonous quantities of asbestos as recently as this year. It can be hard to identify by sight alone so, if you’re concerned about asbestos in your home, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
